O-Canada ! Here is just a friendly reminder that the new 10-year enhanced ePassport goes into effect for all #Canadians on July 1, 2013. If you renew before the 1st you will save some money but will be caught up in the transition as we move over to the new biometric passports. You will now get to have a choice when applying for the first time or renewing your passport, and you can choose either the standard 5-year or enhanced 10-year biometric passport. Keep note that all childrens’ ePassports will only be issued for a maximum of 5 years (there is no 10 year option as children change too much during this time).

By strengthening identity checks, ePassports will help reduce the risk of other countries imposing visa requirements on travellers. (Needing a visa can add up to $150 per trip, depending on the country and our agreements with them.) This will be a slow transition but the hope that this will be a step in the right direction to allow better transitions especially when you are traveling through multiple countries.
Canada’s new ePassport will be full of newly chosen iconic images that will make Canadian passports more attractive and more secure. These images showcase Canada’s history and the building of our great nation and will include images from the Fathers of Confederation to the Famous Five and Terry Fox . #proudtobeCanadian

Considered to be the gold standard of all travel documents, ePassports contain an electronic chip that enhances the passport’s current security features. In compliance with the recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization, over 100 countries, including the United States, France and the United Kingdom, are already issuing ePassports. This organization, which is a specialized agency of the United Nations, was created in 1947. ICAO has 190 member states, including Canada. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, it is the authority on enhancing civil aviation security around the world.
